Chapter Six
Heâs dead.
No, heâs not.
She couldnât let herself believe for a second that she was finally free from Luxo.
His lifeless body lay sprawled on the floor. Blood pooled from a head wound where sheâd hit him with a ball of clay that sheâd painstakingly rolled, used her spit to pack, and let harden until it was dense as rock. It had taken her days to make her weapon big enough to do the job. Sheâd been scared that when she finally was able to attack him that the clay wouldâve broken apart and all her efforts wouldâve done nothing but pissed him off.
She couldnât see Luxoâs face, but caught the rise and fall of his breathing from his chest. She crawled to him but only reached his legs before the chain stopped her, making the metal collar around her neck bite into one side. She coughed, her mouth dry from dehydration. The sounds came out as hacking breaths.
The key.
She stretched forward, straining to reach him.
I canât. I have to.
Now wasnât the time to give up. If she didnât escape, he would kill her for sure because of what sheâd done.
She ignored the pain in her neck and laid flat on the floor. The angle of her body hurt her spine, but she could reach his pockets. She rummaged blindly through them.
Cling. Cling.
Got it.
There were so many. Too many. Luxo locked everything. Food. Water. Bathroom. Doors.
Me.
With her prize held tight to her naked breast, she scrambled away. Her hands shook as she tried each key, forcing it into the lock in her collar, one at a time.
Too small. Too big. Not the right fit. Right fit, but not the correct key.
Luxo stirred.
She whimpered.
Another key. And another key.
âMate,â Luxo said in a slurred voice. She didnât know if it was his drunken stupor that made him sound that way or because of the knock to his head. But she didnât want to find out.
She began to whimper and fumble more. Her time was running out.
Luxo stretched, trying to wake up. Panic rose within her bones, making it harder to grasp the keys. Her hands wouldnât do her bidding.
Please. Please. Please.
The lock clicked its release. The heavy collar fell from her neck and hit the floor. She took a gasping breath.
Free.
She pushed herself to stand, but her legs were too weak. Her muscles had grown atrophied from not walking and she was weak because she hadnât eaten in days. Heâd only given her water because she hadnât âearnedâ her food yet. She hadnât the energy. She dropped to the floor with a heavy thud.
Luxo turned over with a grunt. His dark eyes landed on her. His double reptilian eyelids blinked. Once. Twice. âMate.â His forked tongue darted from his mouth.
A warm rush of urine streamed down her legs.
No. Iâm so close to freedom.
Grekon tried his best to ignore the whimpering coming from the bedroom. The last time heâd checked on Tina she was asleep. By her sounds sheâd woken up and was now crying.
